Rosa and Clara are on their way by car to a wedding in Palermo but, following an argument, they take a side street and meet, head-on, another vehicle, bursting at the seams with a local family, which is being driven by an elderly lady, Samira. Each refuses to reverse and let the other car pass, tempers get heated and what starts as a trivial traffic incident develops into a monstrous Mexican stand-off. Like goats on a mountain pass, neither car’s occupants will budge and soon the entire working-class neighbourhood gets involved, with plots, counter-plots and even a betting ring.

Emma Dante was born in Palermo in 1967. She graduated in 1990 from Rome’s Accademia Nazionale d’Arte Drammatica Silvio D’Amico. After founding her own theatre company in 1999, she became a multi-award-winning theatre director and emerged as a prolific polymath, working in opera, exhibition design and literature, as well as children’s books, while remaining inspired by her native Sicily to direct and produce theatre.
