Manuela is a spirited and independent teenager sent to a boarding school when her mother dies. The Prussian principal runs the school with an iron hand, believing that discipline and hunger strengthen a girl's character. Like the rest of the girls, Manuela develops a crush on Elizabeth von Bernburg, a young teacher who believes it's important to be the children's trusted friend. Manuela's mistake is to announce her love in front of guests and students at a party following a school play. How will the principal discipline Manuela, and how will Fraulein von Bernberg, Manuela, and the other girls react to the principal's decisions? This is the first feature film to be produced with an openly pro-lesbian storyline and remains an international cult classic.

Directors Biography
Leontine Sagan was an Austrian-Hungarian theatre director and actress (1889-1974). Trained by Max Reinhardt, she defied the male-only world of Central European theater direction with her work as a stage director in 1920s Austria. She is best known for her ground-breaking film 'Mädchen in Uniform' (1931). In 1932 she directed and edited 'Men of Tomorrow' in England. Sagan then moved to South Africa in 1939, returned to theater direction and co-founded the National Theater of Johannesburg.
